Telecom carrier Chine Mobile now has 15.279 million 3G mobile communication subscribers, the largest total among the three 3G operators in China, while China United Telecommunications (Unicom) has seen its 3G user base increase to 10.55 million, according to statistics by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
China Unicom was granted the rights to exclusively distribute Apple's iPhone 4 in China and sold out 100,000 units in three days. Its 3G subscriptions, however, have yet to see substantial growth, which means iPhone 4 purchasers are mostly existing subscribers. China Mobile is offering Micro SIM cards that are applicable in the iPhone 4 and iPad to retain subscribers, and China Telecom is in talks with Apple for a CDMA-based iPhone 4.
Mobile phone users in China now total 833 million. Thus far in 2010, China added of 86.09 million new users, of which 10.24 million were from September alone.
Fixed network subscriptions on the other hand have declined to 310 million compared with 347 million about five years ago. Subscriptions for fixed network are expected to continue to trend down.
