At the CEATEC Japan trade show this week, Samsung, in partnership with UQ Communications, is demonstrating a trial version of 330-Mbps WiMax 2 – which is a faster network than the original 4G, though it remains compatible with current WiMAX deployments.
The demo of the WiMAX 2 network has been set up on Samsung’s commercial mobile WiMax base station - the same base station which is deployed by a number of WiMax operators around the globe.
According to Samsung, the standards for the new WiMax 2 network will likely be in place next month; thereby indicating that products ans services based on the standard will become available by the end of 2011.
Noting that the IEEE 802.16m technology displays full high-definition 3D videos and four large format displays (LFDs) on the WiMax system and device, Samsung said that system software and upgraded channel cards can be used by vendors for moving current WiMax users to the new WiMax 2 standard. Furthermore, existing mobile WiMax devices will be able to easily interface with WiMax 2 networks.
In a statement, Woonsub Kim, executive VP and head of telecommunicationssystems business at Samsung Electronics, said that “mobile WiMax opened up the era of mobile broadband and is already the component of many optimizedsolutions.” Kim added: “We strongly believe WiMax 2 will deliver even richer communication services to customers while unlocking a potential opportunity for service providers.”
