Speaking in a press release, Charles Dunstone, founder and chairman of Carphone Warehouse said: “It is the cheapest phone we have ever sold.”
Announcing this new offer, Mr. Dunstone also warned parents stating that the youth market isn’t interested in calls and texts. Instead, he said: “These days if you can’t access Facebook [kids will say] ‘Thanks very much Santa, but I want one of those [smartphones].”
So, what does the offer include?
As well as picking up a new phone for less than £1, customers get a £10 card on Virgin Mobile pre-pay.
While many people over the last year have been lured by rather more expensive phones such as Apple’s iPhone and more recently Nokia’s N8 smartphone, Charles Dunstone believes the mobile phone pre-pay market will explode in the run up to Christmas.
Concurring with this, the retailer’s Chief Executive, Roger Taylor said in a press release“[I] don’t expect festive sales to drop as a result of austerity measures because phones are one of the last things people stop spending on.”
According to analysts Carphone Warehouse’s recent boost in its share price is likely to boost the value of the retailer by around £50 million.
