Top 5 Android Phones

You can find it on HTCs, Samsungs, Motorolas, LGs, and more. It's everywhere. There's no escaping the wildfire that is Android these days. From its incipience with the T-Mobile G1, all the way to the red carpet with some of the hottest devices on the planet, Google's beloved OS has managed to breed like bunnies across the mobile briar patch. But with so many Android phones out there, how is one to choose? As part of our Expert Guides, we've lassoed the top 5 Android phones in our countdown to make your life a hell of a lot easier.

#5 – HTC Inspire 4G

It's easy to find a cheap Android phone, but typically the less you pay, the less you get. The HTC Inspire 4G for AT&T Wireless is an exception to that unfortunate rule. For $100 with a two-year AT&T contract, the Inspire 4G offers impressive HSPA+ speeds, the latest version of HTC Sense with Android 2.2, an 8-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording, giant 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, and 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Say what!? We're talking high-end features at a relatively cheap price. For that reason alone, the HTC Inspire 4G earns its place within our countdown, but it also performed quite well in most of our tests. If you don't have that much money to burn, but want to run with the high-end Android crowd, the HTC Inspire 4G (Full Review) is your answer.

#4 – Samsung Galaxy S 4G

Although we provoked the Samsung Galaxy S 4G (Full Review) by calling it a Vibrant 4G due to its similarity, the Galaxy S 4G actually brings some important upgrades to the table. The primary entre is the phone's HSPA+ speeds of up to 21Mbps, the appetizer is the front-facing camera to accompany that speedy HSPA+ goodness, and after dinner mints were represented by the slight boost in battery juice. Users that live within prime 4G territory will want the Samsung Galaxy S 4G for its Speed Racer performance, thanks to the HSPA+ capability and 1GHz Hummingbird processor. Users that are upgrading from a 3G Galaxy S phone will be familiar with the TouchWIZ interface, minimizing the learning curve. The Samsung Galaxy S 4G might not be for everyone, but the chosen ones who live where speed runs rampant within the air will want to check this phone out.

#3 – Nexus S

Oh yeah. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is what we're talking about! The Nexus S (Full Review) is the black sheep within this herd, rocking the latest version of Android to hit the mobile phone community. The Nexus S is also a purely Google experience. No annoying social widgets or space-chomping fanfare to clutter up your experience. You want facebook? Go get it yourself from the market! Because the Nexus S is such a barebones device, its battery life trumped all within its class, hands down, even with its 4-inch AMOLED screen. The sleek genius has 16GB of NAND flash memory, a front-facing VGA camera, and a 1GHz Hummingbird chipset. But the main event was the phone's enhanced Android experience, courtesy of Gingerbread. Our #1 Geek phone is also one of the top Android phones on the market, so if you're a T-Mobile customer, you're in luck.

#2 – Motorola Droid X

It's one of the best of the best when it comes to the current Android fleet. The Motorola Droid X (Full Review) is an entertainment powerhouse with its 4.3-inch FWVGA screen and lightning quick 1GHz OMAP processor. Want to watch movies? Play games? Lose yourself in a sea of social interaction? Get sucked into the Internet all day? The Motorola Droid X rocks for any of the aforementioned activities, and more. The phone is even more powerful with its Android 2.2 upgrade, and its ample 8-megapixel camera is highly facebook friendly. There are not many phones that can compete with the Motorola Droid X, even with all of the latest releases coming out, though we know at some point the phone's days are numbered. Our advice? Enjoy this beast while you can!

#1 – HTC EVO 4G

We never would have thought that almost a year after our coverage of the HTC EVO 4G (Full Review) unveiling that the phone would still be at the top of the charts. That's proof that HTC broke serious ground with the EVO 4G, and the competition has been scrambling to trump it ever since—take the Motorola Droid X for example. At the moment, the HTC EVO 4G is the only phone that has it all—front-facing camera, HDMI connection, giant 4.3-inch high resolution screen with kickstand, Android 2.2, and an 8-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording. Add the Android Market, and you really can't ask for more until technology progresses within the smartphone market. If you still have a chance to snag an EVO 4G, now is the time.
